This is a drawing by Kathleen Whitfield of my wonderful boy Mr. Darcy. He entered our house and our hearts on January 3, 2009 when we adopted him through the Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue. He is trying hard to live up to his dignified name. He can resist just about anything but temptation and could well have been named ‘Raider’. Alas, Mr. Darcy he is.

Because of some serious health issues in the past, the list of Mr. Darcy’s friends even includes a pet nutritionist and the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Cary.

Now he is well, though, and the memories of his trials and tribulations are fading as he is rapidly making more friends. He would like for you to know those he holds dear. Please click on one of the headings below to be directed to the right spot on this web page.

Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue

The top spot clearly belongs to those who have helped to bring Mr. Darcy (and Gatsby before him) into our home. The members of the Weimaraner Rescue are working tirelessly to find homes for Weimaraners who, for whatever circumstances, are finding themselves without a sofa.

Veterinarians

Our regular vet is Dr. Jon at Magnolia Animal Hospital, located at 4200 Capital Blvd in Raleigh. I have known and trusted Dr. Jon since October 1998 when we first met and I had my beloved Gatsby, and he is now helping me take care of Mr. Darcy. Click here for his web site.

We are also very well acquainted with the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Cary, located at 6405 Tryon Rd in Cary. They were - quite literally - a life saver, and I cannot sing their praises enough. Let’s hope that Mr. Darcy will stay healthy and only make social visits. They are open 24 hours every day of the year. Click here for their web site.

Pet Nutritionist

Yes, there is such a thing. Dr. Susan Lauten has played

an instrumental role in Mr. Darcy’s recovery last year

after his surgery. So far, I have never met her in person

because she lives in Knoxville, TN, but I have come to regard her as a good friend. I will also continue to use her professional expertise as it appears that my wonderful boy is allergic to a lot of food (unfortunately, that does not stop him from eating it). To find out more about Dr. Lauten and the services she can provide, please click here.

Pet Portraits

I hope that you have already admired the portrait of Mr. Darcy above. The one on the right is of Gatsby who went to the rainbow bridge in February 2008. Both were done by Kathleen Whitfield. As is often the case with original artwork, the scans and the subsequent reduction in size cannot do them justice. What baffled me most about her rendering of both of them is that she has captured the very heart of their souls. To me, they are looking at me just the way Gatsby used to and Mr. Darcy does now.

To contact Kathleen Whitfield, please e-mail her at kawhitfield@bellsouth.net or call her cell phone at (919) 607-3395 or her home at (919) 365-0406.

Animal Photographer

Mr. Darcy recently had his picture taken. And there cannot be any doubt that there is a difference between me taking a picture and Diane Lewis taking one. Just see for yourself.

This photograph captures the essence of Mr. Darcy in the most remarkable way.

And below he is every inch a Mr. Darcy.
